Haemonetics/Infonalé's Presence at 2007 SABM Annual Meeting
The Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) 2007 Sixth
Annual Meeting was held at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood,
California on September 7–9, 2007. Haemonetics made a huge visual commitment
to its mission: Blood Management . . . Bringing it All together. A 20-foot x
20-foot booth, complete with continuing blood management education, launched
a new corporate visual identity that introduced Infonalé as a new
Haemonetics company to the industry.
Haemonetics/Infonalé presence was established with the display of six
clinical
poster
abstracts, participation in an Autotransfusion Forum, and a
satellite-dinner symposium on perioperative anemia management “directed” by
Dr. Richard Spence.
Autotransfusion Forum
There were four panelists on the Autotransfusion Forum. Dr. Jonathan Waters
indicated that “cell salvage is a most effective blood management
technique”. Dr. Mark Popovsky followed with a discussion of the economics of
allogeneic blood use. He said: “The cost of blood is much higher than we
think.” Next, Dr. Paula Santrach discussed her findings regarding the low
incidence of bacterial infection during cell salvage. Finally, Dr. Ty Walker
addressed his personal successes with the perioperative use of cardioPAT.
Satellite-Dinner Symposium
Dr. Spence played the director of a “Hollywood-style” educational symposium
on Saturday evening. The audience was tested with electronic, real-time
polling to assess the way they would treat hypothetical scenarios involving
anemia.
Then ‘Director’ Spence guided the cast of experts, Dr. Tim Goodnough, Dr.
Aryeh Shander, and Patricia Parce, in data-driven discussions regarding the
science and application of preoperative anemia management. “Cast members lay
out the facts and concepts in a charming and engaging style and, by the end,
hold everyone spellbound by their compelling message”, said Dr. Spence.
Learning objectives included developing protocols for routine screening for
and diagnosis of anemia four weeks before elective surgery; identifying
patients for whom erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) may be indicated;
safely decreasing the rate of allogeneic transfusions to surgical patients;
and analyzing the cost/benefit for treating anemia preoperatively with ESAs
vs. perioperatively with allogeneic transfusion.
The symposium provided ample evidence to support the development of a
collaborative preoperative anemia management program in all surgical
facilities.
